In the 1954 musical remake of this material (Young at Heart) the John Garfield role was played by Frank Sinatra. One of the differences between the two versions is that, while Garfield dies in this film, Sinatra refused to take the part unless his character survived. After much negotiating and hand-wringing, the studio gave in to Sinatra's demand (partly because Sinatra had recently won an Oscar, and his film career was on the upswing). Despite winning that battle, Sinatra had to cede top billing to Doris Day, because she was under contract to Warner Brothers, and he was a free-lance artist.
