Frequently throughout the film, the character of David quotes lines and references the movie Lawrence d'Arabia (1962) by Sir David Lean. Lean was the original choice for directing an adaptation of Frank Herbert's Dune, before the project was taken over by Alejandro Jodorowsky, who employed Swiss artist H.R. Giger and several other influential artists as conceptual artists for the film. After Jodorowsky's Dune fell apart, the film was picked up by the De Laurentiis Company and Sir Ridley Scott would have directed. He instead did Alien (1979), with the help of Giger and the other artists, who designed the iconic monster and art direction.
