Just like in the film, Commodus really did fight in the Flavian Amphitheater. However in real life he dressed the part Heracles, Hercules to the Romans, even going as far as dawning a representation of the Nemean lion headdress that Hercules killed. It is believed Commodus fought in the amphitheater about 700 times and even went so far as to fight his opponents with real weapons while they only had access to wooden ones.
