Having worked with Colin Farrell on Tigerland (2000), Joel Schumacher was keen to give the lead to Farrell. Studio executives had yet to see Tigerland (2000) and so objected to this casting choice, instead campaigning for Jim Carrey to take the lead. They soon changed their minds when they saw Farrell's work in Schumacher's previous film.
