This film was considered one of the most controversial films within the Hollywood film industry at the time. It has also been considered the first major Hollywood studio film that openly and directly marketed a feature film about homosexuality to the general public. Finally, it was part of a breakthrough cycle of mainstream Hollywood studio films featuring gay partnerships and drag queen characters.
