It was producer Jon Popick who came up with the idea of casting Michael Keaton in the titular role after the release of Beetlejuice - Spiritello porcello (1988). Tim Burton was unsure, but offered Keaton the role and gave him a copy of the script. Keaton was intending to say "no" as he never read the comics as a child and never really was a fan. He read it only out of "politeness". But after becoming engaged with the character, he finally accepted.
