Chard's men were dispatched to Isandlwana and then he was ordered to return to Rorke's Drift. As he was on his way to the mission, he saw a Zulu force in the distance and he warned Bromhead and the others of this when he arrived at about 1:00 p.m. The Zulu army arrived some three hours later.
