The studio originally wanted Daniel Stern to cast Joe Pesci as Chet Steadman or in the role of the baseball commentator but Stern felt if Pesci was cast many audiences and critics would unfavorably compare his film to the first two Home Alone films which to date remain the most successful films of Stern's acting career. Although Stern is also friends with Pesci in real life he declined the studios suggestion wanting to have his film be somewhat distanced from the Home Alone universe so Gary Busey was cast as Chet instead, and although John Candy was in the first Home Alone he was not originally supposed to have a role in this movie. He happened to be visiting nearby the set and asked Stern if he could play a small role and Stern agreed because being that Candy also had a relatively small role in Home Alone and since the two were friends he felt it wouldn't cause comparisons between this movie and the aforementioned.
