The inspiration for the main plot of the film came to Paul Thomas Anderson nearly 20 years before the film was released. He was walking past a middle school in his Tarzana neighborhood when he saw a teenage boy attempting to flirt with a female staff member. It made Anderson laugh to think about what would happen if a teenage boy asked an older woman out on a date only to have her call his bluff and show up.
