This film is unusual among all Bond films because of how it subverts the typical formula for how the usual four lead roles (Bond, Female Lead, Villain, Supporting Lady) are deployed. In most Bond films, Bond is clear on the alignments of those around him. The Female Lead is usually an ally and love interest to Bond. The Villain is usually a threatening male figure. The Supporting Lady is usually the Villain's ally who dies, or a secondary character allied with Bond who is either sidelined or dies. While the film starts out on familiar ground with these four main archetype roles, it soon subverts expectations: Bond is more conflicted and in the dark, Elektra turns out to be the Master Villain, Renard is revealed to be her henchman, Christmas Jones ends up playing a pivotal role in averting nuclear disaster and survives.
