Shortly after Quasimodo rescues Esmeralda from burning at the stake, the fight between Judge Frollo and the townspeople begins. During this scene, Laverne calls to the pigeons, "Fly, my pretties, fly, fly!" The dialogue, the accompanying music, and even Laverne's menacing laugh are all a nod to Il mago di Oz (1939) when the Wicked Witch of the West sends the flying monkeys to kidnap Dorothy. Interestingly enough, Hunchback's lyricist Stephen Schwartz went on to write the next great Broadway musical, Wicked: Part One (2024), the story of The Wizard of Oz told from the Witch's point of view.
