This series is credited with reviving anime both critically and commercially after its slump period in the 1980s and 1990s due to Japan's economic crisis (known as the "Lost Decade"), and with popularizing anime worldwide. It also contributed to surging interest in Christian literature, cosplaying, and otaku culture, the latter of which was critiqued in Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion (1997).
