Like the earlier Philip K. Dick film Blade Runner (1982), this film has a false memories theme. Quaid goes to Rekall to get a memory implant of a trip to Mars that never happened, and Lori tells Quaid "Your whole life is just a dream" (i.e., ALL his memories are fake).
