At the outset, director Dan Trachtenberg gave Alec and Tom a measure of freedom during the design process. "We had a fair amount of wiggle room," said Gillis, "more so than we've ever had before. There's usually an understandable tendency on the part of the studio to want to deliver to the fans what they know and love. And that's okay. If you have multiple Predators, you can always have one that looks like the original guy and then you can play around and make one a little different." In this case, although very respectful of the original Predator design, Trachtenberg "said to us, sort of sheepishly, 'You're not gonna make this look like all the other Predators?'" said Gillis. "What he meant was he had a very specific set of parameters in his mind that he wanted us to work within. He wanted it to look more like a horror character."
