When Maggie is swinging from the bell rope, Ike makes a joke, saying, "Sanctuary! Sanctuary!" This is a reference to the sci-fi film La fuga di Logan (1976) in which people are killed when they reach the age of 30. As a bell rings, they are pulled up into the air and explode when they reach the top. Some of them run, searching for a mythical sanctuary.Correction: this is more likely a reference to Notre Dame (1939) or Il gobbo di Notre Dame (1996), both based on Victor Hugo's classic novel of the same name, and the famous moment when Quasimodo temporarily saves Esmeralda from death by swinging down from a bell rope and carrying her into the church while calling out for sanctuary. Director Garry Marshall's sister, Penny Marshall mimiced this scene seventeen years earlier as Laverne in Laverne & Shirley: The Monastery Show (1983), which he also directed.
