In the beginning of Il Signore degli Anelli - La compagnia dell'Anello (2001), Gandalf tells Frodo that he was barely involved. While it is true that Gandalf is hardly involved with the main plot of the trilogy, Sir Ian McKellen still holds top billing in all three movies.
