Sam Tyler was originally named Sam Williams, but it was considered too conventional, and Matthew Graham was asked to look for another surname. He went to his daughter, who suggested "Tyler", which she based on the character Rose Tyler from Doctor Who (2005). The original surname was later reused for the episode Life on Mars: Episode #2.8 (2007).
