Richard Dreyfuss was not known at the time for playing the lead in romantic movies, he was more known for playing frustrated husbands (i.e. Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Down and Out in Beverly Hills) and Steven Spielberg was urged by Universal as a result to cast another actor. However after Paul Newman and Robert Redford both declined Spielberg insisted on Dreyfuss because he was the only actor who was passionate about the source material A Guy Named Joe (1943) as he proved to Spielberg during the making of Jaws (1975). Many critics and audiences felt this was one of Dreyfuss' weakest performances with Gene Siskel saying his chemistry with Holly Hunter was annoying, and as a result of mixed reviews and lukewarm box office results as of May 2022 Dreyfuss and Spielberg have not worked together again since this film.
