During the first week of shooting, director Lars von Trier felt the cinematography was "too Hollywood" and safe. He also operated the camera for the first take of each scene during the initial week (only a few of his takes ended up in the film). Cinematographer Manuel Alberto Claro had to adjust his operating style to be more free and intuitive, reacting to the actors and not trying to master the scene.
