There were considerable difficulties in creating a working duplicate of the Engineer's chair from Alien (1979). First of all, the original blueprints created by H.R. Giger had been lost, so the designers had to work from old models and screenshots from the original movie. Secondly, the new chair needed to have several moving parts that were not accounted for in the original design. The crew had to come up with ways to have the chair move as required for the movie, while still honoring the original Giger design.
