At the end of the movie, Hansen accidentally confesses his crimes when he sees Cindy from the interrogation room. In real life, he would immediately confess to the murders once the authorities got the ballistics report of his .223 caliber rifle. But he would initially confess to only seven murders of those whose bodies were found. Authorities knew he did so because he would be getting a lighter sentence for the seven murders. Later they brought up more remains from the forest and then he would confess to 10 more murders. It was never as dramatic as seen in the film.
