The origin of the very brief footage of Red Square in Moscow, used in the movie, is explained in the book "Seven Summits" by Dick Bass, Frank Wells & Rick Ridgeway---the 1986 account of Bass and Wells's successful attempt to climb the seven highest points on seven continents. They travelled to Russia in 1981 with their guide/fixer Jack Wheeler, who was a friend of Clint Eastwood's and had recently assisted him with some of the Arctic filming for "Firefox". Eastwood had asked if they could take some establishing footage for the part of the story set in Moscow, so Wheeler took a movie camera to Russia as part of the "expedition equipment". On returning to Moscow after climbing Elbrus, Wheeler unpacked the camera in a corner of Red Square, and then used Dick Bass's shoulder as a camera rest while shooting the short (and entirely unauthorized) footage that appears behind Eastwood, in the role of Mitchell Gant, as he supposedly crosses the square on his way to the Moscow Hotel (which is, in reality, quite a long way from Red Square).
