At the time of filming during the spring of 1989, Kevin Bacon's wife was in her third trimester of pregnancy with the couple's first child. With cell phones virtually nonexistent in 1989, a telephone was installed on the set in order to allow Bacon to remain in touch with his wife from the set's isolated location. Bacon's wife went into labor during his last day on the set, right after filming of the scene where Walter is killed by the graboid. The couple's son, Travis Bacon, was born June 23, 1989.
