Marine Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North was the de facto model for William Sadler's Colonel William Stuart, as the former's politics were staunchly anticommunist as was his fictional counterpart. The whole plot of Die Hard 2 was based on the fallout and scandal of the Iran-Contra Affair.
