It was Neil Spisak's idea to use a collapsed pier as Doc Ock's lair to reflect a warped version of Dr. Octavius's old lab and express how his life had collapsed and grown more monstrous, evoking Fritz Lang's work and the film Il gabinetto del dottor Caligari (1920). The set was 60 by 120 feet and 40 feet high, and took 15 weeks to build. A quarter-scale miniature was built for its collapse.
