The U.S. President depicted is supposed to be Gerald Ford. His fascination with the football game is a reference to his college football days. As he walks around the desk, he stumbles. This is a reference to a time when he tripped and hit his head. Presumed by many to be anything but an intellectual, the bookshelves shown in the oval office are notably empty. His presumed awkwardness and presumed disconnection from reality made him the butt of a number of sketches on Il Saturday Night Live (1975), with Chevy Chase playing the role of Ford to great comic effect. Also depicted in the film is Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, who was a holdover from the Nixon administration.
