During the climax, Harry claims that the Marauders' Map is lying because it showed the deceased Peter Pettigrew. However, Sirius responds that "the map never lies!", indicating that he knows of its existence. It is strongly implied that Lupin also recognized the map earlier, although the movie never fully explains why. Furthermore, the Marauders' Map is credited to "Messrs. Moony, Padfoot, Prongs, and Wormtail", but except for the latter (Peter Pettigrew), the identities of the first three are never made clear. This is surprising, as this was important background information in the book: the four Marauders were Lupin and his three friends, James Potter, Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew. Lupin was a werewolf (hence 'Moony'), so the other three learned to become an "Animagus", who could shape-shift into animals to sympathize with Lupin, and could be around him during his transformations (as werewolves are only dangerous to humans, not other animals). James was Prongs the Stag (a trait passed on to the Patronus of his son Harry), Sirius Black was Padfoot the Dog, and Peter Pettigrew was, more obviously, Wormtail the Rat. Together they also created the Marauders' Map, so they could explore Howarts' castle and grounds without being detected.
