One of the most memorable features in Bradbury's novel that is missing from the film is the Mechanical Hound used to seek out potential lawbreakers and fugitives; who throughout the story makes Montag paranoid that it suspects him. Because the budget for the film did not allow for expensive special effects it was written out. Instead, Truffaut had the fireman's pole refuse to work for Montag as an indication that he was no longer a committed member.
