Director Léa Mysius said the sequence in which Ava bathes naked with her eyes blindfolded could have been disturbing if it had been a man making it and if it had been his gaze on a very young girl. "Instead, the fact that I am a woman gives me a lot of freedom in filming naked bodies and desire. I am legitimized to do so. My gaze on her cannot be perverted because I am a woman. This is fine with me, and indeed my gaze is not perverse."
