Ryan and his three brothers initially enlisted in the same unit; they were split between different units as a result of the fate of the Sullivan brothers, who all died aboard the cruiser USS Juneau. While James, the youngest, became a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division, Sean remained with the 29th Infantry Division (killed on D-Day at Omaha Beach); Peter went to the 4th Infantry Division (killed on D-Day at Utah Beach); and Daniel who went to an unnamed infantry unit (possibly Task Force Tornado, killed a week prior to D-Day in New Guinea).
