This is Pixar's first follow-up film outside the Toy Story franchise to focus more on its original protagonist (in this case it being Lightning McQueen) because of the majority of Pixar's other follow-up films have whoever was the deuteragonist or major character in the original film - Mater in Cars 2 (2011), Mike Wazowski in Monsters University (2013), Dory in Alla ricerca di Dory (2016) and Elastigirl in Gli Incredibili 2 (2018).
