Screenwriter Sidney Howard refused to come out to Hollywood to write the script for Selznick and insisted on doing it from his house in New England. In the era before fax machines, Howard's multiple drafts and Selznick's many memos had to be sent by mail and telegram. Eventually Howard's final script was rejected by Selznick who enlisted Ben Hecht, among others, to rewrite it. Both Hect and director Victor Fleming consistently went back to Howard's final draft to use for filming when it became clear that the rewrites of Howard's script were inferior to his final draft.
