Ed Warren begins the exorcism on Carolyn Perron by saying what is called the Vade Retro Satana. Which is a Latin phrase meaning 'get back, Satan". It is a prayer developed in the Middle Ages by Saint Benedict to ward off evil spirits and is part of ritual exorcism. The full prayer is CRUX SACRA SIT MIHI LUX / NON DRACO SIT MIHI DUX VADE RETRO SATANA / NUNQUAM SUADE MIHI VANA SUNT MALA QUAE LIBAS / IPSE VENENA BIBAS Which roughly translates to: "May the Holy Cross be my light / May the dragon never be my guide Begone Satan / Never tempt me with your vanities What you offer me is evil / Drink the poison yourself." In addition to being part of an exorcism, it can be said by laypeople as prayer to ward off unclean spirits.
