In order for William Devane to play Senator Gregory Sumner for the show's fifth season, though he didn't technically join the cast until three episodes later, the show needed to resolve and wrap up some previous cliffhanger storylines from the previous season, including John Pleshette leaving the show. His character was only intended to be a guest spot for 8 episodes. His chemistry with the cast and his popularity with fans ended up changing the producers' minds and they decided to keep him on the show. Devane stayed until the series' ending.
