Lord Kitchener was a real life figure, a veteran of the Boer War who was killed when his ship, HMS Hampshire, hit a German mine while en route to Russia on a diplomatic mission in 1916. The film recreates the ship faithfully, and her name is seen briefly on the newspaper Conrad reads about Kitchener's death.
