The film was a pet project of Nazi Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels who wanted to change the real life tragic story just enough to show some key staples of Nazi ideology and view of history such as blaming Western capitalist greed for the sinking of the ship and how a fictional pro-Nazi German officer on board was the real hero of the story and not the Brits.
