Sara Gilbert was considered for the role of Kim Boggs, but the producers of Pappa e ciccia (1988) wouldn't allow her out of her contract. Julia Roberts, Molly Ringwald, Lea Thompson, Alyssa Milano, Jennifer Connelly, Ally Sheedy, Heather Langenkamp, Elisabeth Shue, and Uma Thurman were also considered for the role.
