Roger Deakins was initially set to be the director of photography, having worked so successfully with Denis Villeneuve on his previous movie Blade Runner 2049 (2017). Scheduling difficulties meant that Deakins was unavailable, so Greig Fraser took up the reins. Both Deakins and Fraser won the Oscar for Best Cinematography for their work on these consecutive Villeneuve projects.
