The rights to "Barnaby Jones" and Buddy Ebsen's earlier series "The Beverly Hillbillies" have been owned by the same company since 2000, after Viacom, whose Paramount Television division gained ownership of "Barnaby Jones" in Viacom's 1999 acquisition of Spelling Entertainment Group and thus absorbed Worldvision Enterprises, acquired CBS, which held the underlying rights to "The Beverly Hillbillies". Paramount Television had already been distributing the latter in syndication since 1995, following its absorption of Viacom Enterprises, the former syndication arm of CBS.
