The story that Saladin's sister was in a caravan attacked by Reynauld of Chatillon (and perhaps raped and/or murdered by him) is mentioned in the medieval chronicle written by William of Tyre and repeated by a modern writer in his own book about Richard Lionheart and Saladin. That book was clearly used as a source for the film's script, but the story has in fact been thoroughly debunked by modern historians.
