Ben Kingsley won Best Actor for this film, while the following year the award went to Robert Duvall for Tender Mercies. Duvall quipped at his chances that Academy voters tended to value the work of British actors over American ones. Several actors in this film, both American and British, share a role with Duvall who appeared with Martin Sheen in Apocalypse Now, and separately played Robert E. Lee in Gods and Generals and Gettysburg. Duvall also played Doctor Watson in The Seven-Per-Cent Solution. Several cast members have also played that part: John Mills in La maschera della morte (1984), Michael Hordern in Piramide di paura (1985), and Kingsley in Senza indizio (1988). Kinglsey and Duvall also share a second part: Adolf Eichmann. Duvall played the part in The Man Who Captured Eichmann (1996), while Kingsley played the role in Operation Finale (2018).
