The rusted out tractor Mr. Ages lives inside was inspired by an abandoned threshing machine which had sat in a neighboring field next to Don Bluth's childhood farmhouse, and which Bluth and his siblings had played around as children. The machine was still there while the movie was being made, and Bluth called his father to take pictures of the inside and outside for the animators to use for reference.
