When Kirk starts reading at the film's ending in his quarters, he notices that one lens on his glasses is badly cracked. So he was unable to finish the book with all of his faculties working. Ostensibly, the cracked lens symbolizes the loss of Spock, so close to Kirk, that they were an inseparable pair that worked together so well.
