The famous opening scene was modeled after a real mob wedding at the Hotel Astor in New York City on August 18th, 1956: the marriage of mob boss Joseph Bonanno's son, Salvatore "Bill" Bonanno to mob boss Joseph Profaci's niece, Rosalie Profaci. It was intended to reinforce an alliance between the two families. The wedding was attended by all of the major mob bosses and their associates, and singer Tony Bennett performed to over 3,000 guests.
