The reason the cricket is constantly subject to amusing injuries - one of which prominently involving a hammer - is likely a nod to his fate in the original book, where Pinocchio got annoyed by him and smashed him with a hammer, and he spent the rest of the novel as a ghost. Not to mention, Sebastian is basically telling the entire story from beyond the grave.
