Sir Christopher Lee nearly severed two fingers on his left hand when he suffered from Jet lag in his hotel room, having woken up late in the night and stumbled in the dark while trying to find the bathroom. Sir Peter Jackson shot around the Saruman actor's injury by having every camera shot avoid including his left hand in frame in many scenes, even holding off shooting scenes to allow for his injury to heal, allowing several brief moments for his left hand to be shown such as when Saruman shows the Palantir to Gandalf. In many other scenes, Lee's left hand is covered by his sleeve for when his hand was still healing. Despite his injury, Lee credited Gandalf actor Ian McKellen, for helping him through the pain through the strong friendship they formed while working on set and their shared sense of humor.
