When Galadriel confronts Sauron, she calls him 'servant of Morgoth'. In Middle-earth lore, Morgoth was the first Dark Lord and conqueror of Middle-earth who was defeated at the end of the First Age; Sauron, Morgoth's lieutenant, took over that role during most of the Second Age, which ended when the One Ring was taken from him. This is the only explicit mentioning of Morgoth in the entire Middle-earth film series; an obscure reference is made in Il Signore degli Anelli - La compagnia dell'Anello (2001), where the Balrog (a species that had allied with Morgoth during the First Age) is described as "a demon of the ancient world".
