Claude Rains had a cold for part of the film shoot and it was making his voice particularly gravelly in some scenes. The producers said that the tight budget precluded the option of re-recording his lines in ADR once he had recovered so his dialogue was tweaked on each day of shooting so as to not make it too obvious he had a sore throat. Director Irwin Allen also tried to get as many of his his speaking scenes as possible shot in one take so as to not put excess strain on him.
