Sheldon (Jim Parsons) didn't always have his signature door-knocking quirk. In both the second (The Big Bang Theory: The Big Bran Hypothesis (2007)) and fifth episode of season 1 (The Big Bang Theory: The Hamburger Postulate (2007)), he knocks on Penny (Kaley Cuoco)'s door only once and without calling her three times; the habit didn't start to emerge until episode 10, The Big Bang Theory: The Loobenfeld Decay (2008) (like many of Sheldon's traits were conceived over the course of the first season). Sheldon finally explains in The Big Bang Theory: The Hot Tub Contamination (2016) that the habit originally developed after he came home one day unannounced, and found his father in bed with another woman; the prolonged knock is "for people to get their pants on". It is possible that Sheldon was able to shake this habit before Penny came to live across from him, but it fully returned after he inadvertently caught her with one of her lovers off-screen.
