In an interview on the DVD extras, Matthew McConaughey says of his role as The Man in Black: "Walter has many senses of evil. Whether it's a strain of flu that takes out a civilization..." A possible nod to Captain Trips, the flu variant in The Stand who's main villain is the Man in Black, going by Randall Flagg. "...There's all kinds of fun ways to be evil."
